Application guidelines are publicly discussed until 19 May

A public consultation on the guidelines for project applications under the “Greener Border Region” priority of the Interreg (VI-A) IPA Bulgaria - North Macedonia 2021-2027 programme is launched. They have been developed by the Managing Authority of the programme - the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works of Bulgaria, together with the National Partner Authority in the person of the Ministry of Local Self-Government of the Republic of North Macedonia. The Programme Priority promotes the development of a greener, low carbon and sustainable border region with an economy in transition towards zero net carbon emissions by promoting clean and equitable energy transition, green investments, circular economy, climate change mitigation and adaptation, risk prevention and sustainable urban mobility.

The aim of the public consultation is to identify project proposals that would contribute to the creation of ‘green infrastructure’ in urban and peri-urban areas, with wide-ranging impacts that positively affect people’s health and wellbeing, support the green economy, create job opportunities and enhance biodiversity.

The budget for the measure is just over €4.6 million. It foresees investments in the construction of green spaces in urban and peri-urban areas, the development of natural green urban areas such as parks, gardens, green sports facilities, forests, improvement of abandoned areas, etc. Investments in the development of green infrastructure in urban and peri-urban areas supported by joint strategies and action plans are eligible. Target groups include local authorities and regional structures of central administration, research and academic institutions, NGOs, etc. The proposed interventions aim to mitigate the risks of ecosystem loss, climate change, largely affecting the need to protect urban and peri-urban biodiversity as important pathways of ecological corridors.

The programme covers the districts of Blagoevgrad and Kyustendil on the Bulgarian side and the North-Eastern, Eastern and South-Eastern regions on the side of the Republic of North Macedonia.
