Drinking water and wastewater treatment plants are among the priority sites, replacing hundreds of kilometres of water mains and sewers

The preparation of regional pre-investment studies (RPIS) for the districts of Sofia region, Gabrovo, Targovishte, Haskovo, Veliko Tarnovo and Pleven are at the final stage. This was announced at a workshop in Sofia, where the results achieved so far were presented. The strategic documents have been developed under the project of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works “Supporting regional investment planning of the W&S sector - stage 2”, funded by the Operational Programme “Environment 2014-2020”

They identify sites in agglomerations with more than 10 000 inhabitants equivalent to be renovated with EU funds to comply with EU directives and national legislation on drinking water and waste water, and to reduce drinking water losses. The studies give the full picture of the state of the networks and the investments needed in all settlements with a population of more than 50 people, the meeting found.

The agglomerations with more than 10,000 people in Veliko Tarnovo District, in which the Environment Programme 2021-2027 funds will be invested, are Veliko Tarnovo, Gorna Oryahovitsa in combination Lyaskovets and Svishtov. In Gabrovo District the agglomerations Gabrovo and Sevlievo are included. From Pleven district - Knezha and Pleven.

The regional pre-investment study of Sofia region foresees that the agglomerations of Samokov, Botevgrad, Ihtiman, Elin Pelin and Kostinbrod will have access to the programme funds. Targovishte and Popovo are the only ones with the necessary population for investment in Targovishte region.

Haskovo, Dimitrovgrad, Harmanli and Svilengrad are the agglomerations included by Haskovo district.

The projects are of utmost importance for the W&S companies because they will be the beneficiaries of the operational programme. As such, they will conduct the tendering procedures for design, construction, and in some cases engineering, and will be contracting authorities under the Public Procurement Act.

Investments will be directed towards the repair and upgrading of existing drinking water and wastewater stations, the construction of new ones, as well as the repair and construction of water and sewerage supply lines, internal water and sewerage networks, real-time monitoring and control information systems, and GIS systems.
